The Lesser Known Side of BAPE®
Japanese fashion label, A Bathing Ape or BAPE® (A Beishingu Eipu), can always be relied upon to serve up some bold streetwear vibes, so even basic garments like logo T-shirts come splashed with spunk and character. But how much do you really know about one of the coolest streetwear labels around town?
Read on to find out more interesting fun facts about BAPE®:
Did you know that the signature BAPE® CAMO patterns are unique to each country?
The Red, Blue and Green are the designated colour combination representing our proud little nation. This pattern is exclusively available only at its Mandarin Gallery flagship store.
Founded in 1993 by Tomoaki “Nigo” Nagao, the brand is named after the 1968 American sci-fi fiction film starring Charlton Heston and Kim Hunter, Planet of the Apes.
A Bathing Ape is also derived from the Japanese saying of “bathing in lukewarm water” – an ironic reference to the younger generation of Japanese being spoiled, pampered and too complacent.
BAPE® counts celebrities like hip hop stars Pharrell and Kanye West as fans, with the latter even mentioning the brand in one of his songs, Stronger.
Last but not least, did you know that BAPE® has relocated to #02-08 at Mandarin Gallery? The new store features a stairway that is accessible via Orchard Road (look for the secret entrance) and is also the perfect locale for your next #OOTD shot with its uber cool decor.
